Environment and Landfill
Traditionally - and to a much greater extent than most other European nations - the UK has tipped much of its rubbish into landfills. Those days are coming to an end as the country is simply running out of large holes in the ground into which rubbish can be dumped. By cutting back on using landfills we create less methane from the rotting rubbish in them. Methane is a 'greenhouse gas' more than 20 times as powerful as carbon dioxide in raising the planet's temperature
The cost to the local tax payer will increase as the Government Landfill Tax, levies a charge on every tonne of material dumped into tips. That figure stands at £32 per tonne and is rising at no less than £8 every year. The Government has also set local authorities targets for the reduction of rubbish going to landfill, which if not met will incur a fine of £150 for every tonne over the limit.
People with a Disability
We recognise that people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities are at risk of social exclusion and we are confident that the volunteering opportunities we offer can prevent this from happening. We do this by encouraging them to work alongside both paid staff and other volunteers. This ensures they are integrated into the TRUP team.
We understand it is important for these people to be part of a work-based environment, giving them confidence and a feeling that they are contributing something valuable and worthwhile to their community.
Long Term Unemployed
Long term unemployment can have devastating effects on people’s lives. It can cause financial hardship, depression, a loss of confidence and the possibility of spiralling into crime. Participating in a work-like environment provides the basic discipline of having to be at work at a certain time, for a fixed period. This can be a vital skill which needs to be learnt.
Working with Crown Life Skills, TNG, and Pathways to Employment, we provide placements where the unemployed can come and gain valuable work experience, build confidence, and learn a wide range of skills from office admin to furniture repair. It can improve their prospects of finding successful and continuous employment in the future.
Volunteering
People volunteer for many different reasons. They may choose to volunteer to develop skills, gain experience, to socialise or to give something back to society. They may also volunteer because they feel a moral duty or compelling reasons to take part in voluntary action or support a particular cause. The key element is that it is freely undertaken.
Employment
TRUP is a local employer with 4 out of the 5 staff members being Thurrock residents. We believe local people have local knowledge and it is our intention that, if successful with this contract, we will recruit whenever possible from the unemployed.
Financial Hardship
Thurrock is ranked as the 124th most deprived authority in
Many new tenancies fail in the initial stages because of a lack of financial resources to provide the basic household items that turn a house into a home. Supplying these basic items at a low cost can go some way to helping eliminate the "revolving door" situation that too often happens when debt incurred in setting up home leads to getting into rent arrears, being evicted and having to start all over again.
